Smith Cooper makes it four-in-a-row as headline sponsor of Awards

Posted on 28 March 2014

Midlands’ accountants and business advisors Smith Cooper are headline sponsor of the Midlands Family Business Awards for the fourth consecutive year.

Smith Cooper predominantly works with owner managed businesses, with over half of its client base being family businesses. It has been headline sponsor of the not-for-profit Awards, the region’s only independent awards initiative for family run and owned businesses, since 2010.

The firm has one of the Midlands’ largest teams of advisors specialising in supporting family businesses and their owners, operating from a network of offices across the East and West Midlands, providing guidance on issues such as succession planning, finance for growth, and shareholder agreements.

The Smith Cooper family business team is led in the East Midlands by Chris Taylor, Partner and in the West Midlands by Jackie Hendley, Partner and Head of Tax, who said that the Midlands Family Business Awards are a perfect fit for the firm:

Chris commented: “As leading advisors to family businesses, our role is to help the owners identify their long-term goals and take the actions required to achieve them. Whilst each family business is unique, and the challenges they face are different to one another, our vast experience within the sector means we are well versed to deal with any issues business owners come across.

“It is this clear link to family businesses that has encouraged us to pledge our support for The Midlands Family Business Awards. The Awards play a vital role in both recognising and celebrating the work of those who have excelled in difficult times and we are proud to announce Smith Cooper is headline sponsors for the Awards for the fourth year running!”

Since pledging its support to the Midlands’ family business sector as headline sponsor of the Awards, the firm has added 90 members to its team, and been voted The Corporate Advisory Firm of the Year in England for two years running, Midlands Tax Planning Firm of the Year and a British Accountancy Awards finalist.

The East/West Midlands is home to approximately 240,000/205,000 family businesses, which accounts for 77/58 percent of all businesses in the region and eight/almost seven percent nationally, according to figures released by Families in Business (FiB), of which Smith Cooper is an Exclusive Partner in Birmingham.

Chris Taylor/Jackie Hendley added: “The Midlands Family Business Awards give the region’s family businesses the rare but fitting opportunity to showcase and shout-about their incredible work, and shine a light on the significant contribution this sector makes to the Midlands’ economy both in terms of revenues and jobs.”

The Midlands Family Business Awards are organised and underwritten by their creator The Wilson Organisation, a one-hundred year old, third generation family business, which provides insurance and financial advice to businesses and individuals from its Nottingham head office.

Wilsons’ MD Charlotte Perkins, explains that Smith Cooper’s involvement in the Awards adds a number of vital benefits: “The support we receive from the team at Smith Cooper is fantastic. Their financial contribution helps to ensure the awards are viable but, equally importantly, Smith Cooper brings a valuable insight and understanding of family business dynamics and issues that really help us to shape the awards. We're thrilled Smith Cooper has returned as headline sponsor and we are looking forward to working with them again in 2014.”

Since their launch, the not-for-profit Awards have raised in the region of £20,000 for charities supporting young people and enterprise.

The 2014 Midlands Family Business Awards officially launch at events in Birmingham and Derby on the 1st May, when entries for the Awards open and the full portfolio of sponsors, categories and judges for 2014 will be revealed.

The reigning Midlands Family Business of the Year is Nottinghamshire-based manufacturer Belton Massey, Europe’s largest independent manufacturer of high quality, non-original catalytic converters.

Family businesses generate over £1 trillion each year in UK revenues and provide more than nine million jobs in the UK.
