Teams Gear Up for the Jenson Button Trust Triathlon Team Challenge

Posted on 1 June 2015

Six legal eagles from Derby solicitors Flint Bishop are amongst the first to enter the Team Challenge event as part of the Jenson Button Trust Triathlon which will be held for the first time in Derby this July.

The two teams made up from the Corporate and Commercial Litigation departments at Flint Bishop will be going head to head at the event in Markeaton Park on Sunday July 12 – playing to their own individual strengths.

The corporate team is made up of Martyn Brierley (cycling) Will Bowler (running) and Ran Oren (swimming) whilst the Commercial Litigation team members are Parminder Takhar (running), Nick Wells (cycling) and Andrew Perry (swimming).

They will be joining the Team Challenge event, sponsored by Midlands business advisors and accountants Smith Cooper.

Teams of three people (either all male, all female or mixed) can enter the Team Challenge as part of the Triathlon by visiting

Each member will tackle one of the three Triathlon stages. The team challenge will consist of the first person swimming 200m in Markeaton Lake, then handing over to their teammate who will cycle 10km into the city centre and finally, the third member completing a 2.5km run at the park. Each team will get to race twice – once in the morning and once in the afternoon.

Team members will all receive a medal and a goody bag as well as one signed race T-shirt per team from Jenson Button, which they can display in their workplace or home.

A special tent will be erected in the event village on the park where team members can relax, enjoy a post-race massage and soak in the atmosphere with food, drink, live music and prizes to be presented by Jenson Button.

Team entry costs £250 and competitors are encouraged to raise as much money as possible between them for the Triathlon’s official charity partner, Cancer Research UK.

Solicitor Will Bowler, who took part in the recent Derby 10k race, challenged colleagues to tackle the triathlon and those accepting the challenge include associate Martyn Brierley and partner Nick Wells, who both took part in the 50+ mile Cycle Derby Sportive last autumn and partner Ran Oren, who boasts an Olympic swimmer in his extended family.

Will said: “We will all be playing to our own strengths and, jointly, hopefully we will do well in the triathlon.

“We are all a pretty competitive bunch so will probably be raising the majority of our sponsorship money for Cancer Research UK by opening a book for colleagues, friends and family to back the team that they think will finish in the fastest time.”

Nick Wells added: “I would like to think that we are all pretty fit but, as the date approaches, we will need to be stepping up our training and ensuring that are as well prepared as we can be for the challenges ahead.

“The day sounds like it will be great fun and it would be fantastic to have the chance to meet up with seasoned triathletes and of course Jenson Button himself, whilst competing against our colleagues and many in the Derby professional community that we work with and know well.”

David Nelson from Smith Cooper added: “The Team Challenge is open to groups of friends or work colleagues who perhaps find the prospect of completing all three stages as an individual daunting but who can now join together and play to their own individual strengths.

“They will compete alongside the individual competitors which include novice, amateur and professional triathletes including Jenson Button himself.

“As a firm, we are also planning to enter a team and I am sure that many other businesses and groups of friends will follow suit.  Entries will be on a first-come, first-serve basis as there are limited team places available so I would encourage those interested to secure their plans and register early.”
