Richard Tonks

Director of Business Recovery and Insolvency, Birmingham

Main line: 0121 236 6789

I am a director in the dedicated Business Recovery & Insolvency Division of Smith Cooper. I am a qualified Insolvency Practitioner and have been a business advisor for over 16 years, with particular emphasis on assisting distressed businesses offering solutions to directors, shareholders, banks and other business stakeholders.

I have assisted businesses in most sectors but have particular experience in manufacturing, not-for-profit, hotels, retail and leisure.

What can I do for your organisation?
I offer a sounding board to managers, owners, investors and other interested parties of distressed and/or underperforming businesses. By listening to the problems I seek to offer a view on the current financial position, options available and help to forge a path forward.

Experience counts
I am a Licensed Insolvency Practitioner and a member of the Association of Business Recovery Professionals (“R3”) having qualified in 2009.

Prior to joining Smith Cooper, I spent 16 years with BDO where I undertook most roles, starting as the office junior before climbing the ladder to Director. During that time I assisted on assignments ranging from the management of retail outlets, tier 1 automotive supply chain, charitable entities and a Formula 1 motor sport team!

I also spent six months on secondment to the ABL division of a high street bank, giving me a unique insight to the procedures and management of distressed lending.

Personally speaking
I enjoy spending time with my family and playing or watching most sports. If I’m not in the office, I’m probably on the golf course trying to get the handicap down!

I am also proud to be a Brummie, born and bred.
