I am Human Resource Manager based in Smith Cooper’s Derby office. I am a human resource generalist with a strong knowledge and background in employment law. As well as an internal HR function, I also work with our external HR consultancy.
What can I do for your organisation?
Externally, I work with small and medium enterprises that do not have a HR presence in their business. I offer a telephone advice line and I can help implement HR procedures from contracts and company handbooks to recruiting. I can also advise on disciplinaries and redundancies.
I worked at the London Stock Exchange as a line manager in the legal department for 5 years beginning in 1985. Key tasks included supervision, training and appraising of secretarial staff; liaison with higher management; implementation of office efficacy procedures; and various administrative duties, which included keeping records of staff holidays and sick time. I also organised the move to another site when the legal department split into two.
In 1990, I had the opportunity of taking on a project to help start a new office working for two lawyers who formed their own partnership. The job was in San Francisco for a company called Wellar and Drucker and I was predominately responsible for marketing.
Returning to England in 1995, I began working as a Human Resource manager for Kirkland and Ellis, in London. I was recruited to start-up, manage and administer the London office of this large Chicago-based law firm. Initially my duties incorporated marketing, client development and office facilitation alongside the HR function. I often returned to America as I travelled frequently between the Chicago, New York and London office.
Under a fixed term contract, from 2002 – 2003 I was employed by AEA Technology Rail. I was Human Resource Advisor and dealt with HR related areas such as fixed term and permanent contracts as well as disciplinaries and grievances.
In 2004 I began working for Smith Cooper. As Human Resource Manager, I have responsibilities internally and externally. Internally I am responsible for dealing with general HR issues such as absence management and ensuring the company complies with employment legislation. Externally, I assist businesses that do not have an internal HR presence in their business.
I have experience working in many aspects of HR however my background and extensive knowledge of employment law is my expertise. I have attended courses towards my CIPD Advanced Certificate in Employment Law on: Employment Law, Advanced Employment Law, Disciplinary Procedure and Industrial Tribunals. I also have an ISOSH certificate in managing safety.
Outside work I can often be found reading. I am an avid football fan and season ticket holder at West Bromwich Albion. I enjoy a trip to the cinema or a music concert. I also like going to the theatre and ballet.
