Phishing in a local pond
We have been made aware of a local business who have had over £40,000 stolen as a result of phishing e-mail which appeared to be from a company they regularly do business with.
Whilst their IT systems did have comprehensive anti-virus/phishing software, a Trojan email did make it through before their antivirus software could both identify it / block or clean the item.
What are phishing e-mails?
Phishing e-mails are designed to steal your identity by asking for personal details or by directing you to websites/phone numbers.
It isn’t always obvious that an e-mail is fraudulent as they are often disguised to look legitimate, and many appear to be from known and trusted sources such as suppliers, banks, or even individuals from your address book.
Top online threat
According to a leading information security company, phishing stands as the top online threat for individuals and businesses with worldwide attacks costing more than $1.5 billion in 2012.
