From 1 October 2014, an employee or agency worker, who is the expectant father or the pregnant woman’s partner, will be entitled to take unpaid time off to accompany a woman to antenatal appointments.
The right is limited to two occasions lasting no more than 6.5 hours each, which includes travelling and waiting time.
Employees are entitled to take the time off without requiring any qualifying service, however agency workers must have 12 weeks service with the hirer before they become eligible to this new right.
This right differs from the mother’s right to time off for antenatal appointments, which is paid.
