Beware of new HMRC phishing scam

In the past week, a new phishing scam has been identified in the form of a HMRC email entitled “Your 2016 Tax Report” and contains an attachment. It is essential this attachment is not opened, but instead forwarded to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk and deleted thereafter. HMRC declare they will never use text or email correspondence to

  • Tell you about a tax rebate or penalty
  • Ask for personal or payment information

It is imperative you exercise caution when receiving emails, even if it’s from what seems to be a legitimate source or someone you regularly communicate with. It is recommended you only open attachments if it is something you are expecting to receive.
