Nicola Whiting, trainee accountant at Smith Cooper Accountants and Business Advisers, has been elected as Vice Chairperson of Nottingham Chartered Accountants Students Society (NCASS).
NCASS is the local student society for the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and it is run by students for the students. The ICAEW set up the student societies to provide trainee accountants with an opportunity to meet people who are also studying for the ACA from a wide range of industries and organisations - nationally and internationally. They run a series of events such as seminars, revision sessions and social events to provide a forum for networking and continuing professional development.
The Vice Chair and Chairperson roles for the society are elected by the local community. The roles have to be applied for by the candidates, who are then voted in at the AGM. There is generally some competition for the roles. The Vice Chairperson role can often lead to being elected as Chairperson, although this is not a given.
Of her appointment, Nicola said, “I am very proud to have been elected as Vice Chairperson of NCASS. When I started on the committee almost 2 years ago NCASS was smaller with members mainly from the Big 4 firms, however the committee continues to grow year on year with new members from a wider range of firms. It was great to be elected by my fellow students and I am looking forward to the challenges and responsibilities the role will bring.”
Smith Cooper has recently had its Platinum Employer Status renewed by the ACCA in recognition of the firm’s commitment to progress its trainees’ careers as finance professionals. Smith Cooper Accountants and Business Advisers also offer independent financial advice, Sage software sales and support, managed IT services, mobile phone and communications for businesses and mortgages.
