Purpose of Role
Smith Cooper Limited, a progressive business and advisory firm based in the Midlands, are recruiting for Audit Trainees for their Birmingham, Derby and Nottingham offices.
As an Audit Trainee you will be assisting the audit team in undertaking testing of financial records and system procedures in order to assist the team in providing an opinion on the financial statements.
The role will see you acting in both an external and internal audit capacity as well as assisting in the preparation of financial statements.
You will have opportunities to work with limited companies, charities, academies and LLPs.
Your time will be split between working at client premises, working in the Smith Cooper office and studying towards your ACA/ACCA exams.
What you will do
In the first year of your training contract your duties will typically include:
Assisting the onsite audit team by:
- Undertaking directional transaction testing of sales, purchases and wages;
- Reviewing bank balances, bank statements and cashbooks;
- Verifying fixed asset additions/disposals, existence and depreciation estimates;
- Trade debtor testing;
- Nominal analysis and identification of variances and trends;
- Posting trial balances;
- Undertaking detailed analysis as prescribed by the audit senior;
- Identifying and recording simple audit errors;
- Engaging with the client in gathering appropriate audit evidence.
Assisting in the preparation of financial statements for limited companies;
Attending company stocktakes and undertaking testing on an individual basis;
Analysing income and expenses for the tax team;
Studying towards the ACA/ACCA qualification and attending internal training sessions;
Developing an understanding of the principles of double-entry bookkeeping;
Using knowledge from previous assignments to recognise and understand recurring issues and themes;
Developing an awareness of Smith Cooper’s policies, procedures and ethical requirements;
Participating in firm events and team building activities.
We are looking for an ambitious and driven individual who can work well as part of a team, adapting to differing working environments and who can demonstrate strong initiative. Utilise strong analytical and numerical skills;
Understand financial statements and financial terminology;
Be able to communicate effectively with both the audit team and client staff and build relationships;
Meet deadlines by organising and prioritising workloads, ensuring that work produced is both accurate and timely;
Be able to balance work, study and life commitments;
Present a professional image of the firm at all times;
Work and travel around the East Midlands region and sometimes further afield (requires own transport);
Participate in meetings, providing succinct information and feedback.
A strong academic record is essential, with a minimum of a 2:1 degree, preferably in a finance related subject.
In the absence of a degree, strong A-level results with subsequent accounting experience will also be considered.
Training contract & support
You will receive a 3 year training contract studying toward the ACA/ACCA qualification.
We will provide a full study package and at one of our chosen professional colleges which will include classroom based learning, online tuition and one to one mentoring.
We also conduct in-house informal training courses to ensure the audit team develops technical insight and complies with changes within the audit and accounting regulatory environment.
You will receive feedback from seniors/managers after each audit and a tailored development plan will be formulated to ensure your knowledge is developed across all areas.
